Student Feedback What to do: What NOT to do:
Student Feedback Giving student feedback: - Student centered - Personalize - Tone and voice - Sandwich approach - Moderation is key - Be specific - Learning styles and reading ability - Turn around time - Resubmissions - Time management
Be Student-Centered Learn about your students Care about them The more you know, the more you can help
Personalize Use greetings and closings Use names whenever possible Think about the student in question Sign your name
Sample Feedback Dear Janet, This is a good presentation to the Board of Directors. I would have liked to have seen you include more details found from your research. However, you addressed many important issues. It is apparent that you have researched this topic. Your investigative skills are improving! Have a nice week. Thank you, Mrs. Teacher
Tone and Voice Remember that your voice sometimes comes across differently in email than it does in person. Choose your words carefully so they cannot be misconstrued. Think about your tone. Remember proper netiquette. Be positive!
Remember… - Use proper grammar and punctuation. - Do not use ALL CAPS to emphasize a point. This comes across as yelling. - Don’t overuse exclamation points!!! - Always address the reader (Dear Amanda, Hello, Greetings, Amanda) - Acknowledge submissions.
Sample Feedback Hi Mike, Thanks for resending. I got everything this time. Smiles, Mr. Virtual Dude Hola Milly, You did a great job using the vocabulary! Let’s see how we can perfect this: -Use “yo” instead of “me.” -inelegante (spelling) -El caballo es (delete “es”) Smiles, Senorita Escuela
Sandwich Approach Something positive Suggestions for improvement Something positive
Sample Feedback Dear Jamie, You seem to understand the basic structure of writing and the need for specific examples. The Lance Armstrong example is excellent! What I want you to work on is developing your writing more so that each point is accompanied by a specific example. You also need to focus on sentence structure. You seem to have a tendency to use sentence fragments. We can work on that. You have the potential to be a strong writer. It will take some practice. Are you ready? Smiles, Mr. Teacher
Be Specific Be specific in what students have done incorrectly and what you would like them to change. Include the “why” behind your suggestions. You’re not in the classroom where you can explain yourself as soon as a student needs you.
Sample Feedback Dear Robert, You did a fine job of answering the question and of explaining your position. You referred to information found in the background movie and the documents to support your position. Make sure that you understand the difference between the Covenant of Works and the Covenant of Grace for the midterm exam. Keep up the hard work! Smiles, Ms. Teacher
Learning Styles Can you incorporate feedback for different kinds of learners? - pictures (clip art, graphs, charts, photos) - video (Jing, Teacher Tube) - audio clips (wave files, podcasts) - things to “do” for kinesthetic learners?
Reading Ability? Can impact a student’s understanding Hard to determine in the online setting Ask pointed questions to learn about students Use reading interest inventories to gain information about students Audio feedback and videos can help these students understand your feedback and what you want them to do
Resubmissions? If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. Mastery learning Multiple chances Encourage success Failure is not an option Decreases fear Increases motivation, self-esteem, love for learning
Sample Feedback Hi Jim, You have a great start on this assignment. However, your discussion answers need more work. I would like you to go back and use the student sample link. The sample responses show what you should and should not do when writing your discussion answers. Please be very thorough and make sure you always edit for spelling and grammatical errors. Your creative option work is off to a great start, but your overall assignment needs some attention. Please resubmit with corrections. See the edited version for details. Smiles, Mrs. Online Teacher
