What is Blended Learning? Multiple definitions • Combination of work + training • Combination of online and in-person, classroom learning activities • Combination of pedagogical approaches • Combination of different technologies
Multiple definitions • Natural • Broad – “nothing new” • Narrow – “on-line / F2F teaching” Connotation + / -
Terms • Students – technophobes / technophiles / digital natives / learning styles - preferences • Teachers - technophobes / technophiles / ‘healthy sceptics’
A practical definition “Blended Learning refers to a language course which combines a F2F (face-to-face) classroom component with an appropriate use of technology” (Sharma / Barrett)
What makes BL work? Four principles • (1) Separate the role of the teacher and the technology - “fuzzy” vs “crisp” • (2) Principled teaching – led by pedagogy, not technology • (3) Complement / enhance / integration • (4) “It’s not what it is, it’s what you do with it” (Jones)
