Connections with History • College students only choose major/minor and told what classes to take-Similar to university set up today • General magic classes required by all college students, no matter their major- General Education classes required today • “Decide what society should be” (pg. 91)- progressive education in history developed instruction around life, home and community of the student
Connections with History • Vocational training (practical education) looked down on- Same today in places • School’s democratic role in society- teaching students how to think – teachers focus on teaching students how and not what to think • The 3 core subjects in Paleolithic times stuck around after they were obsolete. When educational stereotypes are established, they outlive changes to society (xxxv).
Connections with Math and Science • Students are taught math and science traditionally without considering their needs • Students are taught without much consideration for their future…still taught traditional subjects no matter what
