  3. 80% of wildfires caused by people 2007 73,446 fires caused by humans (85%) (1.4 million hectares) 12,261 from lightning (2.4 million hectares) federal cost = $1.8 billion

  4. Human causes: • campfires – main cause on FS lands • debris burning – main cause on state lands (home and agricultural debris) • arson • equipment sparks - powerlines, railroads, vehicles • smoking Human cure: Prevention education, engineering, and enforcement/encouragement

  5. Prevention = Partnerships Firewise www.firewise.org Firesafe www.firesafecouncil.org Education of homeowners; Engineering for homes; Voluntary

  6. Work with communities before a fire. Work with communities potentially affected by a wildfire – Firewise Teams. People are most receptive when they smell smoke in the air.

  7. Community Wildfire Protection Plans Encouragement – federal funds to implement silvicultural activities

  8. Community Wildfire Protection Plans Minimum requirements: • collaboration; • prioritized fuel reduction; • measures to reduce structural ignitability.

  9. Mutual agreement by: Local government; State forester; Local fire department(s). Community plan tied into federal plans
