  3. BRS/Search History on NT • Prototype port done in 1992-1993 • Release 6.2 • initially released in 1995 • No queues, limited functionality • Release 6.3 and NetAnswer 1 • released in late 1997 • currently at patch level 80+ • NetAnswer 2 • versions released in 1997, 1998, & 1999

  4. BRS/Search Differences on NT & Unix • One load queue • No offline print queues • Native mode only available as an NT console program • Maintenance done via BRSVMNT

BRS Benchmarks on NT • Done at Compaq Benchmarking Center in London • System • Compaq Server with 4 400mhz Intel Pentium Iis • Each machine with 1mb cache and 512 mb memory • 4 4.2gb disks in a RAID5 array • Windows NT 4 Service Pack 3 • BRS Configuration • BRS/Search 6.3 patch 53 • TRUNCMAX=0 • Database • 250 mb in 2-11 piece concatenations

Client Sessions • Process • TRUNCMAX=5000 • Do a database list • Open concatenation • Perform 14 search and display sets • sleep of 5 seconds between each action • Perform 2 additional searches • Examples • “(JOHN* or JON*) NEAR5 M* • (SWAN or SWANN) near5 (PH or PUBLIC or BAR) • ((CHECK adj1 SWINDL*).METH. And LONDON and (((*MANCHE near5 PIPER).AIRC.) or (SPEED*.BOAT.)

  7. BRS/Search Benchmark Timings Timings in seconds

Benchmark Conclusions • Never use UNC paths on NT machines if at all possible • BRS/Search performance on NT is memory dependant: add more memory • NT does not make great use of additional processors on a multi-processor system • BRS/Search can be effectively used in medium to large production applications using Windows NT • Conclusions are based on Windows NT 4 Service Pack 3
