2. 2011-12 UC TCA News UC TCA (Transfer Course Agreement) update email and schedule sent on 4/6/11
On the first day of your campus’ scheduled month you will receive detailed instructions
Results will be disseminated within 30 days for all on-time submissions
If you do not intend to submit you must contact UCOP for both the first and second review periods
3. UC TCA Update Reminders OSCAR (Online Services for Curriculum and Articulation Review) outlines must be marked as “complete” and for “review” or they will not be included in the UC TCA Update
All submissions must be received electronically through OSCAR
Your OSCAR access closes on the 25th of your scheduled month
All on-time submissions are reviewed each month before any late submissions are reviewed
4. UC TCA Review
Each year, UCOP identifies an area of review for UC transferable courses based on faculty recommendations
Further, this process helps to screen for general course requirements agreed upon by all 9 UC campuses
Therefore, we are able to maintain standards in acceptable course content for specific subject categories across the UC system
Precalc: UC faculty allows students to receive the credit they earned for one course or for two split courses without limiting units.

5. History Review for 2011-12
Courses articulated in the history major will be reviewed by UCOP this year to verify that the content explicitly states reading and writing outside the textbook.
Courses affected: World, Western, US, European, Asian, Latin, and African/Middle East (no special emphasis areas or government courses)
During the UC TCA update, reviewed courses will be reconciled with courses identified as needing review
Courses not approved will also be included in the notification
Identified courses must be submitted in the 2012-13 cycle or they will be phased out
6. 2011-12 UC TCA Adjustments Pre-calculus footnotes will be reviewed to remove credit limitations
The following Course Repeatability note has been added to the UC TCA agreements regarding .ea designations:
“An "ea" after the unit value of a course on this agreement is meant to indicate that the course may be repeated for credit under CCC campus policies. Since campus policies on repeatability vary, the "ea" indicator does not guarantee that UC will grant credit for every course that appears multiple times on a student's transcript.”
7. UCOP Admissions Evaluation Coordinator Areas of Responsibility:
Senate Regulations and Evaluation Guidelines for both Freshman and Transfer
Re-consider current policies and practices
Respond to evaluation questions submitted by counselors/advisors – and even articulation officers!

8. UC Evaluation Updates New UC policy for transfer credit of military courses:
“Military Service Courses Award, as appropriate, lower division transfer credit for military service courses as recommended by the American Council on Education and as is consistent with University policy on granting transfer credit, including limitations on total transferrable units.”
Announcement was made to UC evaluators, UC veterans coordinators, and to CCC advisors (via TCW and UC Notes)
Information will be added to UCOP and campus web pages, Quick Reference, etc.
9. Sample Military Course Decisions UC would grant transfer credit in these two examples:
1. Microbiology – Version 2 – award 3 semester/4.5 quarter units of lower division credit in biological science
2. Arabic – Version 2 – award 4 semester/6 quarter units of lower division credit in elementary language
UC would not grant credit in these examples:
1. Math – basic technical skills, specific to performance of a task
2. English – grammar and usage, basic working knowledge of a language
10. Implementation Process Outline Fall 2012 applicants should list courses completed as a part of military service on the admission application; after acceptance, submit official transcript (SMART, AARTS, etc.)
Ultimately, UC hopes to maintain a web-based list of all reviewed military courses
A session detailing the process and outcomes of this policy has been proposed for the 2011 UC Counselor Conferences
11. Answers to FAQs UC will not grant transfer credit to all courses as recommended by ACE; the recommendation will serve as a starting point for consideration
Transfer credit will be granted for military courses if any UC campus has an equivalent course – this is UC standard practice for transferability of coursework from any institution
Although this new policy may not result in a large amount of transfer credit being granted, UC is committed to providing this opportunity to students with military coursework When privates ask if they can get an agreement too, explain we do not have the fiscal resources. When privates ask if they can get an agreement too, explain we do not have the fiscal resources.
12. Changes to Lower Division Major Requirements The majority of UC campus department have an established practice of allowing two years before changing their major prep
A request to consistently apply this practice across all campuses is under discussion
An update will be provided before the fall term
13. SB 1440, AB 2302, and UC UC supports the aims of SB 1440 but is not named as a participant in the bill
AB 2302 asks UC to consider a similar associate degree pathway for transfer students
Interim report due on June 30, 2011
Final report due on December 31, 2011
UC President Yudof has corresponded with Governor Brown affirming our support and calling attention to other positive things we are doing to facilitate transfer
14. AB 2302 Highlights Over the past year, UCOP met with discipline faculty to collaborate on subject requirements for the Transfer Preparation Paths (TPPs)
In the fall, five faculty groups met to discuss similarities in lower-division major prep (math, biology, psychology, computer science, and history)
Before the end of spring, two additional meeting are planned (sociology and physics)
It was discovered that a great deal of similarity already exists – a “common core” – a message we want to communicate to students
The faculty groups will also review and comment on the finalized Transfer Model Curricula (TMC)
UC’s Board of Admissions and Relations with Schools (BOARS) is discussing a UC potential guarantee to review TMC applicants for admissions
15. UC Participation in C-ID UC encourages participation of descriptor and course reviews by faculty
UC faculty members have indicated interest in participating in discussions related to computer science and studio art
UCOP systemwide staff and a designated campus AO attend board meetings and Discipline Input Group (DIG) meetings
C-ID course descriptors are presented to the faculty discipline groups
16. Ensuring Transfer Success (ETS) Update The ETS conference and wait list are full; contact Julie Moore at the CCC Chancellor's Office if you have questions about this year’s event.
