Biathlon is both a winter and summer sport which originated in northern Europe as a survival technique. It consists in the combination of cross country skiing and rifle shooting at a distance of 50 m from a lying down position and standing. Each miss is penalised with a lap of 150 m plus or 1 minute skiing depending on the race (sprint, pursuit, individual, mass start and relay). The large number of factors which influence the discipline of biathlon (physical, psychological, ski preparation, regulating the rifle) make it very exciting and the most watched winter sport on television.
