Parametric Equation • An equation where the x and y variables are defined in terms of a third variable t • These equations will give you the position of an object at a given time t • Switch your graphing calculator to parametric mode: MODE In the 4th row highlight PAR (all other rows should be highlighted all the way to the left)
Projectile Motion • The motion of a projectile at time t (in seconds) is given by the parametric equations: • x(t) gives the horizontal position of the projectile in feet and y(t) gives the vertical position in feet
Solve: • Find the vertical and horizontal position of the projectile when t=2 • At what time will the projectile hit the ground?
Example: • The given equations represent the hawk and dove population at time t (in years) • Graph the population over time
Solve: • Find the population of hawks and doves after 1 year • When will the hawk population reach its maximum value? What is the maximum value?
