  2. Exercise 1 BEFORE YOU WATCH What was the last sports or cultural event you attended? How did you found out about the event, where did you buy the ticket, and how was the experience for you? Do you think it’s a good idea to give someone theatre or concert tickets as a present? Do you have any experience giving or receiving tickets? What are the disadvantages and advantages? What kind of musicians would you like to see live in a concert? What is the difference between listening to a CD, watching a video of a performance, or going to a live concert for you? Are there other kinds of cultural, sports, or civic events that you would like to know about but don’t have good access to their promotional information? Discuss what factors keep some cultural events or cultural business operators from being visible in the community. What kinds of marketing or promotional activities could help them get the word out for their events?

  6. Exercise5 ROLE PLAY and GROUP DISCUSSION • Work in small groups. Look at the company’s website. Identify the various kinds of marketing strategies they use online. Consider 3 ways in which they could improve their website to make it more appealing for young people by promoting emerging artists. Prepare a marketing brief to pitch to the company’s manager to hire you as a freelance design team to make the site more user-friendly with younger audiences. Each group presents their role-play to the rest of the class. • Besides graphic designers, IT, and website programmers, what are some peripheral businesses that are supported by this particular company’s mission? (e.g. tour operators, hotel and restaurant operators, cultural operators, creative enterprises, subculture groups, ad hoc creative events, grant projects, international collaborations, etc.)

  7. Exercise5 ROLE PLAY and GROUP DISCUSSION • Discuss: The company’s owners want to support the event organizers themselves so that they can promote their events to wider audiences. What role do you think business should play in the development of culture? • Discuss the different kinds of business that can operate when someone decides to create their own business: e.g. freelancers, limited company, personal company, stock-based company, idea generators through crowd-sourcing (no company). If you are creating your own business, what kind of company structure would you feel most comfortable to create?
