  3. Viewing Files The first item in the list, which displays the name you use to log on to your computer, allows you to view all of your personal folders.

  4. Personal Folder • Contains your personal files • includes the My Documents, My Pictures, My Music and My Videos folders

  5. Pictures Library • contains your photographs, images and graphics files • many programs will automatically save pictures you create or edit here • when you transfer pictures from a digital camera to your computer, the pictures will appear here

  6. Documents Library • contains your letters, reports, presentations, spreadsheets and other types of documents. • many programs will automatically save documents you create here

  7. Music Library • contains music and other sound files. • when you copy songs from a music CD to your computer or download music from the Internet, the music often appears

  10. USB Flash drive (thumb drive, memory stick) • a small, lightweight storage device that plugs into a USB port on your computer.

  11. Memory card reader • reads and records information on memory cards. • typically has several slots that allow the reader to accept memory cards from different manufacturers and devices • memory cards are most commonly used to transfer information between a computer and an external device, such as a digital camera or video camera.

  15. Search for Files • as files are created, Windows keeps track of your files in an index • the index is similar to an index you would find at the back of a book • quick way to find a file, folder, program, email, and favorites

  16. Select/Deselect files • Deselect – click a blank area of the window

  20. Create a new folder • like placing a new folder in a filing cabinet • keep related files together, such as the files for a particular project

  21. Renaming files • Note: You can also rename a file by clicking the file and then pressing the F2 key. • Note: A file name cannot contain the \ / : * ? ″ < > or | characters.

  22. Moving or copying files • Moving makes a permanent location change • Copying makes an exact duplicate

  23. Deleting files • make sure you will no longer need the file • when you delete a folder, all the files in the folder are also deleted • you can also delete a file by clicking the file and then pressing the DELETE key.

  24. Restoring files • Recycle bin stores all deleted files and folder • When you restore a folder, Windows restores all the files in the folder • Empty the Recycle Bin to create more free space on your computer
