Addition and Subtraction of Fractions To addfractions with the same denominator, we simply add the numerators. 3/10+5/10=8/10 To add fractions with different denominators we first make equivalent fractions until we have common denominators. Then add the numerators! 1/2+4/5=13/10= 1/2=5/10 4/5=8/10 5/10+8/10=13/10=1_3/10

  3. To subtract fractions To subtract fractions with common denominators we simply subtract the numerators. If they have different denominators we need to find an equivalent fraction first. 6/5-3/5=3/5 11/12-1/6= 1/6=2/12 11/12-2/12=9/12=3/4

  4. So Basically….. • Make equivalent fractions with common demominators • Add or subtract the whole numbers and numerators (leave the denominators alone!!!)

  5. Another way… Examine the picture and explain what you think is happening and (if you can- why it works!)
