Physics Vocabulary Motion Word Squares
Motion An object’s change in position, direction, or location relative to a reference point over a period of time. No formula
Speed = distance time SPEED The rate at which an object moves. It is dependent on the distance traveled and time taken to travel that distance END START 150 SPEED = 150 m / 5 sec SPEED = 30 m/sec
Speed = distance time CONSTANT SPEED An object moving at constant speed would cover distance at the same rate over a period of time. END START 150 SPEED = 150 m / 5 sec SPEED = 30 m/sec
Average Speed = Total distance Total time AVERAGE SPEED Average distance covered by an object per unit of time.
Reference Point Moving or nonmoving objects on Earth’s surface in which we can compare to determine motion
FORCE Examples? or a
BALANCED FORCES Forces that act on an object to cancel each other out; the objects motion does not change
UNBALANCED FORCES Forces that act on an object that do not completely cancel each other out, resulting in the object changing position, directions, and/or speed.
NET FORCE Combination of all forces acting on an object is called the net force.
NEWTONS (N) The unit used when measuring the amount of force on an object.
SIMPLE MACHINES Devices that reduce the amount of force needed to move an object.
INCLINED PLANES A simple machine that is sloping at a particular angle.
PULLEY A device consisting of a wheel over which a rope or chain is pulled in order to lift heavy objects.
LOAD The object to be moved using a machine.
MOVABLE PULLEY A pulley that is attached to the object you are moving
FIXED PULLEY A pulley you attach to a structure
PULLEY SYSTEM A combination of fixed and movable pulleys
SPRING SCALE Tool used to measure force
