  3. Find the Theme • What theme do the following phrases have in common? • In over my head. • Out of my element. • Can’t get my head around it. • Coming up short. • Just treading water. • Not up to the task. • The theme appears to be a feeling of inadequacy or incompetence.

  4. Find the Theme • When was a time in your life when you felt incompetent? • We all have times when we feel unqualified, unprepared, or incompetent to address a task. • How do we overcome these feelings? Let’s find out.

  5. Introducing a BookProverbs 1:1-4 • Author (v. 1) • Purpose (vv. 2-4)

  6. Promoting Proverbs • Read Proverbs 1:1-4. • Consider what type of promotional blurb you might write on the back of a book about Proverbs. 1. What would you say about the author? • This collection of wisdom was written by Solomon, son of David, who is said to be the wisest man who ever lived.

What will the reader gain by exploring the book of Proverbs? • This book is a must-read for everyone seeking to live a successful life. • This wise king offers information everyone needs, including how to treat others fairly and helpful tips for making sound decisions.

How do the instructions in the book of Proverbs differ from advice from other sources? • Other sources entice a reader with cynicism or promises that one way is no better than any other. Proverbs is different. • Solomon assures the reader that knowledge based in the fear of the Lord will lead to a godly life, while following the crowd is a path to failure.

How do you handle these in light of Exodus 20:12 and Ephesians 6:1-3?
