Types of Child Maltreatment • Physical • Emotional • Sexual • Neglect
Physical • Can range from slight to severe, and can even result in death • Usually intentional, preventable, and a direct cause of harm • It includes, but not limited to, hitting, slapping, and kicking
Emotional • Occurs when the constant, negative, emotional behavior of a caregiver towards a child impairs the child's emotional progression. • Consists of rejecting, terrorizing, ignoring, isolating, corrupting, adultifying, or emotional incest. • Verbal abuse especially devastating.
Sexual • Occurs when a child or young person is forced to take part in sexual activities, whether or not the child is aware of what is happening or whether there is physical contact or not. • Known to have more female than male victims.
Neglect • The persistent inability to meet a child’s needs, which may gravely harm their physical condition or holistic progress. • Can be further categorized as emotional, educational, or physical. • Most common form of child maltreatment
Conclusion • Child maltreatment rear itself in many different types and forms in our nation. • Researchers and experts have discovered and learned quite a bit about child mistreatment and have been better equipped to assess the seriousness of the matter. • Increased involvement by the law helps deter potential offenders.
