HyperLeda: a strategy ofBulgarian Virtual Observatory HyperLinked Extragalactic Databases and Archives V.Golev, Ph. Prugniel, G. Paturel and M. Tsvetkov Sofia University, Observatoire de Lyon iAstro/IDHA Meeting, Strasbourg Observatory
Where we are… • Virtual Observatory: General context • HyperLeda: The Local Universe • Bulgarian AVO initiatives iAstro/IDHA Meeting, Strasbourg Observatory
Virtual Observatory • The modern observational facilities produse enormous volume of data (10 Tb/year/telescope and will be doubled each year). • The higher data quality permits their re-utilisation. Multiplication of the scientific incom of large facilities. Creation of the necessary infrastructures. • Inter-operability of databases and archives • Construction of virtual instruments, and … • … much more … iAstro/IDHA Meeting, Strasbourg Observatory
Virtual Observatory • HyperLeda is well defined in the context of the Virtual Observatory • The points HyperLeda meet as a VO service are: • LEDA: sample selection on a physical constrains basis (100 parameteres, 3 millions objects) • On-line processing of the information (development of the virtual instrument concept ) • VOTable output (Dec 2002), input/output VOTable operability (April 2003) • HyperLeda understends Astronomical Server URL (ASU) iAstro/IDHA Meeting, Strasbourg Observatory
HyperLeda • 3 millions objects • 1.5 Tb total archive + relevant software • 4 main mirors through Europe: • CRAL Observatoire de Lyon • Astronomical Observatory, University of Sofia • Sternberg Astronomical Observatory, Moskow University • Brera Astronomical Observatory, Milan Duration of the project: 5 years, starting at Jan, 2001 iAstro/IDHA Meeting, Strasbourg Observatory
HyperLeda HyperLeda as a virtual instrument: • Statistically every extragalactic astronomer uses the HyperLeda services 15 times per year • LEDA takes a major part of querator, an utility of Astrovirtel • NED propose to re-distribute the mean data produced by LEDA iAstro/IDHA Meeting, Strasbourg Observatory
HyperLeda The Key Scientific Goals: • The study of the physics, kinematics and evolution of galaxies in the Local Universe. • The study of the stellar populations and dynamics of the nearby galaxies. iAstro/IDHA Meeting, Strasbourg Observatory
HyperLeda offers… Services for the international community • Sample selections specifying a complex physical content • Large-scale statistical studies • Reference data (in particular spectrophotometry) • Access and on-line processing of large surveys, in particular DENIS • Using the virtual instruments (spectrophotometry) Complementarity with NED and SIMBAD iAstro/IDHA Meeting, Strasbourg Observatory

HyperLeda – BG AVO • The strategic interest of Bulgarian astronomy: - In the foresen future BG will not be able to build and/or maintain modern observational facilities - Within 5 years AVOs will be basic utilities for access the new and state-of-art observations - In Germany 8 out of 17 astronomical institutions take part in GAVO, the German initiative of VO. • AVO will up the overal quality of Bulgarian astronomy (professional, educational) - Competences - Operational skills iAstro/IDHA Meeting, Strasbourg Observatory
