  1. HSP 3MI ISU Introduction Mr Ballantyne Bluevale Collegiate

  2. What is an ISU? • ISU stands for “Independent Study Unit” • It is an opportunity for you to learn and apply useful research skills to a topic that you find interesting

  3. Why an ISU? • It is an opportunity to study a topic you find interesting • Shows that you have learned necessary curriculum requirements (Research, Inquiry, & Communication Skills) • Prepare you for similar self-directed projects in Grade 12 and post-secondary education

  4. What is the HSP 3MI ISU? • It has FOUR components: • Phase One – Research Proposal • Phase Two – Annotated Bibliography • Phase Three – Hypothesis and Formal Outline • Phase Four – Final Draft • Each phase is designed to help you develop good research and inquiry skills • This ISU will be a “Literature Review” on a specific issue affecting society and the individual • Though you can do Primary Research if you wish

  5. Phase One – Research Proposal • Decide on a topic to be researched • Do some initial reading to determine if there is enough information on topic and identify issues (areas of debate) • Compose a research question that is specific, relevant, and measurable

  6. Phase Two – Annotated Bibliography • A list of TEN “good” sources related to your topic • Need variety!! (No newspapers or blogs! Be wary of magazines & corporate websites) • The usefulness of each source will be discussed in this phase • Each source will be used in the final draft • Use APA citation format

  7. Phase Two – Annotated Bibliography • APA citation style examples: • Book: Schwartz, D. (1938). In dreams begin responsibilities. Norfolk, CT: New Directions. • Journal Article: Kondro, W. (2002, July 6). Low profile for health at Kananaskis G8 summit. Lancet, 360(9326), 61.

  8. Phase Three – Hypothesis and Formal Outline • The Hypothesis answers your research question and should be specific and measurable … doesn’t have to be “correct” • Outline includes a description of your rationale, a description of your findings, and a discussion of your reactions to your findings • You may include Primary Research but it must be approved by the teacher.

  9. Phase Four – Final Report • A written description of your rationale, research findings, and conclusions • A “good” report describes findings and discusses conclusions • Incorporates a variety of recent academic sources and is applied to the individual and society • The accuracy of your hypothesis should be discussed in the conclusion • Proper APA citation format is required
