  1. Introduction To Slope

  2. Slope is a measure of steepness.

  3. What is the meaning of this sign? • Icy Road Ahead • Steep Road Ahead • Curvy Road Ahead • Trucks Entering Highway Ahead

  4. 7 feet 7% 100 feet What does the 7% mean? 7% is the slope of the road. It means the road drops 7 feet vertically for every 100 feet horizontally. So, what is slope??? Slope is the steepness of a line.

  5. If a line goes upfrom left to right, then the slope is positive If a line goes down from left to right, then the slope is negative

  6. Horizontal lines have a slope of zerowhile vertical lines have no slope = undefined slope = 0 no slope

  7. Remember… Zero Negative Positive Undefined or No Slope

  8. In review… A line has a positive slope if it is going uphill from left to right. A line has a negative slope if it is going downhill from left to right.

  9. Graph (3,2) and (-1,-1)

  10. Draw a line through the points.

  11. Now that we have our line lets find its slope. We are finding the following ratio: Vertical or Rise Horizontal Run

  12. Vertical Changeor the Rise 3

  13. Horizontal Changeor the Run 4 3

  14. Vertical RiseHorizontal Run 3 4 Slope =

  15. Find the slope of the following line. The slope is… • 1 • 2

  16. Find the slope of the line. The slope is…. -3

  17. Positive Slope Find the slope of the line. Slope = change in y change in x 4 1 The slope of the line is 4. 1 unit right (-1, 1) 4 units up or 4 = (-2, -3)

  18. Negative Slope Find the slope of the line. Slope = change in y change in x -2 1 The slope of the line is -2. (-2, 3) 2 units down (-1, 1) 1 unit right or -2 =

  19. Slope = change in y change in x -2 3 The slope of the line is -2 3. Negative Slope Find the slope of the line. = (-1, 1) 2 units down (2, -1) 3 units right

  20. Your Turn Find the slope of the line that passes through each pair of points. Hint: Graph the points first! • (-2, -4), (1, 5) • (0, 3), (4, -1) • (2, 2), (5, 3) Answers 3 -1
