CONTINUOUS MONITORING Contra Costa County CAER Safety Summit June 20, 2013
CONTINUOUS VS. PERIODIC TESTING • Continuous monitoring used in many Turnarounds, but may also have applications during other times • Mostly used for Confined Space Work • Perimeter monitoring
CONTINUOUS GAS MONITORS • Typically set up for four gases – O2, LEL, H2S, CO • Able to provide other detection as well – VOC, SO2 – mix and match up to five gases
CONFINED SPACE WORK • Continuously monitors the space • Hose length adjustable • Local indication as well as remote monitoring • Safety plus efficiency • Allows workers to return to work after lapses • Alarm limits • Work in space may cause condition change – welding, etc.
CONFINED SPACE WORK • The monitors and associated tubing are not indestructible • Potential contaminants and work in space • Monitor will fault if sample draw is interrupted
Other areas • Also used for other areas where monitoring may be required • Hot work • Portable electronic equipment • Establishing ‘green zones’ • Placement of units important – near area where gases may originate from vs. near ignition source
Remote monitoring • Technicians monitoring units for trouble / alarms • Establish alarm points • Communication methods between technicians and plant
