Schedule of Events Conduct BOCES-by-BOCES meetings • Purpose of meetings: Gather information related to three basic questions: • 1. Did we get the Policy right? • 2. What must schools do to implement the Policy? • 3. What should the State require all schools with middle-level grades to do to ensure that all students are successful?
Schedule of Events • Hold meetings by April 30 • Enter and submit information collected from the meetings
Immediate Needs • Scheduling and organizing BOCES-by-BOCES meetings • Reviewing Tool Kit materials • To be sent electronically to the District Superintendents next week
Scope of the Public Engagement Outreach • BOCES and local school districts • Professional Organizations - Educational • Youth Development Agencies / Organizations • Parents • Students
Scope of the Public Engagement Outreach • Higher Education Institutions • Teachers from disciplines where there are State assessments and from disciplines where there are no State assessments
The Rest of the Story • Conduct follow-up sessions at the local level that focus on middle-level education. • Review and revise the 1989 Regents Policy Statement on Middle-Level Education and Schools with Middle-Level Grades. • Review and revise Commissioner’s Regulations (e.g., Section 100.4).
The Rest of the Story • Identify and document effective middle-level practices and programs, especially those related to curriculum and instruction, Academic Intervention Services (AIS), personal development, and drop-out prevention. • Disseminate effective middle-level practices and programs.
The Rest of the Story • Create a Statewide Network of Middle-Level Education Support Schools. • Devise new strategies to develop and recruit quality middle-level teachers and leaders. • Establish networks of interagency partnerships that foster academic achievement and positive youth development in the middle grades.
