M.A.S. Program • The Master of Advanced Study in Transborder Studies is designed for professionals who work closely with Mexican-origin and other Latino populations. It enhances the knowledge and skills of such professionals and other interested students in order to make them more proficient in their work in those communities. • The degree accomplishes this through a course of study that provides the highest level of training in the areas of health practices, cultural production, educational attainment, media representation, migration and immigration patterns, and community development. Admission requirements • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) or a graduate degree from a regionally accredited College or University. • Bachelor’s degree must be in the social sciences, humanities, sciences, health, education and business or professional field. • Minimum of a 3.00 cumulative GPA (scale is 4.0=A) in the last 60 hours of a student’s bachelor’s degree program. • GRE required. • TOEFL required for applicants from a country whose native language is not English. • http://graduate.asu.edu/admissions/international/english_proficiency
Degree requirements • 30 credit hours: 18 credit hours of coursework, 9 credit hours (3 semesters) internship, 3 credit hours capstone experience. • Written examination and oral examination through portfolio and performance assessment. • Foreign language examination: Students will be required to demonstrate sufficient communicative proficiency to function in field settings where Spanish is spoken and to read the literature in the original language, whether English or Spanish. Sufficient proficiency will be defined as intermediate level. Students’ Spanish language proficiency will be assessed through an oral and written assessment developed and administered by the School.

internship • TSS 601 Internship (9) • An innovative, yearlong, three-part internship (placement in summer, fall, and spring semesters) • students will focus their attention on achieving concrete goals for their internships, set and agreed upon in consultation with internship faculty and site supervisor before the beginning of each internship
capstone • TSS 608 Transmitting Transborder Studies to Publics and Institutions (3) • students will integrate all they have learned as it relates to their specific area of interest in transborder studies through a trio of presentations in which students will demonstrate the ability to communicate research on a transborder issue of their choice to three different constituencies: academics, community members, and policymakers
