Significance of 30P(p,γ)31S Gateway Reaction in ONe Novae

Learn about the importance of the 30P(p,γ)31S reaction as a gateway for the production of heavy elements in ONe novae. This reaction has previously had large uncertainties, impacting the understanding of heavier element abundances produced in novae. Recent studies have significantly reduced the uncertainty and revealed an increase in the reaction rate by a factor of 10, along with the assignment of spins and parities to levels of interest.

  1. Key Resonances in the 30P(p,γ)31S Gateway Reaction for the Production of Heavy Elements in ONe Novae Why is this important? The 30P(p,γ)31S had been shown to be a gateway reaction for the production of elements heavier than sulfur. Previously the large uncertainties of the reaction rate left the abundances of heavier elements produced by ONe novae with large uncertainties. www.astroart.org www.astrobio.net D. T. 3. Results • The uncertainty of the 30P(p,γ)31S reaction rate has been significantly reduced. • The rate was shown to increase by up to a factor of 10. • Spins and parities have been assigned to levels of interest.
