  2. RESEARCH • Animals have the ability to sense earthquakes. • When animals are in fear, they tend to run to any area they feel is a sheltered area. • Research proves that having a building structure in resemblance to a pyramid is more sturdy and is less prone to shake during an earthquake. • Also, having springs attached to each corner beneath the pyramid-like structure will cause the building to move with the motions of the earthquake. • Applying straw bale between the inner and outer walls will help absorb the shock of an earthquake. • Earthquakes can cause huge surface damage to buildings, properties, and bridges. • Earthquake L waves cause the greatest damage on Earth’s surface. • Brevard Fault Line is a major fault line in Georgia in the Blue Ridge Mountains

  3. PROBLEM IDENTIFIED PROBLEM: • There is not yet an invented structure that is made to keep animals/livestock safe in a calm environment from the power of earthquakes. IDENTIFIED PROBLEM: Georgia’s Earthquakes • Georgia has had 7 earthquakes in the past year • 6 earthquakes have occurred in Milledgeville, GA in the past 5 years (2.2-3.2 Magnitude) • Evans, GA has experienced 8 earthquakes in the past 11 years (2.1-3.5 Magnitude) • Vidalia, GA had an earthquake 10 years ago (3.6 Magnitude)

  4. SOLUTION Our Design Solution: • We created a design for a safe living area for animals during an earthquake. The structure includes: • pyramid shaped structure • straw bale between the inner and outer walls • Shock absorbing springs attached to the corners under the building

  5. SHARING School Event (Christmas in the Middle) Pet Stores Vets & Animal Shelters We attended an after school event that is open to the general public, where we shared this presentation and explained the protection needed for the animals during earthquakes. More than 500 parents, students, and community members attended this event. Our project was shared on http://www.dublincityschools.us/school_home.aspx?schoolid=2 We sent out a brochure to the local pet stores of Dublin that suggested a new design for an earthquake resistant animal living space. We emailed our idea to a major pet chain store for feedback. We created a flyer and sent it out to the vets and animal shelters located in the area of Dublin. The flyer that was sent out also showed the structure that will keep animals and livestock safe from an earthquake.
