Demo I Have a stone and a feather. I am going to drop them at the exact same time, from the exact same height. What do you think is going to happen? What could this have to do with drag?
The stone falls quickly because the drag of the air is small (compared to its weight). Drag has a much greater effect on the fall of the feather. • Drag is a force which tries to slow down anything moving through the air. Another name for this force is air resistance. • CHALLEGE: A sheet of paper falls slowly through the air, like a feather. How can you make a sheet of paper fall more quickly? Investigate ways of making a sheet of paper fall as quickly as possible. Challenge 2: Stones fall quickly through the air. How can you make
Review of Drag: -Drag is one of the four forces of flight. -Drag acts against any object that is moving through air or water. -In regards to flying an airplane, the drag of the air makes it hard for the plane to move quickly. Another name for drag is air resistance.
Do we know what drag feels like? -Do you feel air pushing against you when you walk? Do you feel drag pushing against you when you swim? When you are walking in water you can feel a resistance of the water ( it is harder to walk in water, then it is on land.) This resistance slows us down. (There's more drag in water than in air, because it is denser). Air exerts the same pressure on a plane when it fly's. This air pressure creates a resistance to the plane, and makes the plane slow down.
How does drag effect the flight of a plane? • The force of drag helps a pilot steer a plan. • The flaps on a plane helps to control the drag of a plane. This helps a pilot control the level of resistance that they want their plane to exhibit. • Drag can reduce the speed of a plane because its force tries to stop motion. • Drag can also be used to help slow down an object. Such examples are parachutes. Parachutes increase the drag of a flying object, and therefore slow it down.
