Power Failure in ACS AffectedSolar Max Mission (SMM) • Solar Max Mission was launched in early 1980 into a 574 km 28.5 orbit • A power failure in the ACS caused the satellite to go into safe mode, which lasted for 3 years! • Challenger (STS-41C ) launched Apr 6, 1984 to complete repair(Francis Scobee was the pilot) • The Modular ACS was returned toEarth, refurbished and flown on the UARS mission in 1991 • The fine-pointing Sun-sensor system had a precision of 1 arcsec along all 3 axes • SMM collected data until 11/89, and reentered 12/89
