  1. CC6 Distress Mapping Pavement Working Group 2012 SRA International Federal Aviation Administration April 24 – 26, 2012 By: Josh Davis

  2. Outline • CC6 Pavement Design • SOW Objectives • Trafficking Plan • Distress Mapping • SCI Evaluation • NDT Imaging Survey • Conclusions • Questions

  3. CC6 Pavement Design P-501 Concrete Pavement P-306 Econocrete Base P-403 Base Course P-154 Subbase Course Reworked Subgrade

  4. SOW Objectives • Primary • Effect of flexural strength on structural life • Secondary • Effect of modulus of elasticity on structural life • Compare econocrete and HMA stabilized base • Compare thickened edge and reinforced isolation joint • Grooving research • PSPA standard for rigid pavements • GPR Assessment • Compaction requirements under rigid pavements

  5. Test Plan

  7. SCI Evaluation • Structural Condition Index (SCI) is a numerical value assigned to a pavement based on the structural distresses observed through visual surveys. • The SCI scale is 0 – 100. • For CC6, SCI values were calculated for each test item. • End of design life is valued at 80. • Testing parameters dictate testing well beyond the end of design life.

  8. NDT Imaging Survey • Capable of fast documentation of visible distresses • Reduces time needed on runways/taxiways • System cost and maintenance cost • Massive data storage requirements • Max. 1mm resolution

  9. Conclusions • CC6 was designed to research the effects of flexural strength and modulus strength of concrete pavements for airport design • Four of the SOW objectives could be partially achieved by visual survey • Documentation of the visual survey provides a time history of distresses in relation to passes • Visual distress surveys can be used for SCI evaluation • Technology is allowing visual surveys to be conducted at “high speed” reducing down time of runways/taxiways
