  2. College Visits • Preliminary List • Think about combined programs and majors • Start checking each college’s admission website to see if an RSVP is necessary • Info Session/Campus Tour • Find out about interviews • Prime Time to visit schools: February break, April break, any other days off

  3. Common Application • ONE essay is written to send to each school on your list that is on the Common Application • Begin writing essay in the summer after Junior year • Who to ask for proofreading? Teachers, relatives, mentors, any trusted adult

  4. Supplements • With each school that uses the Common Application, there is a college-specific Supplement as well • Start doing Supplements over the summer as well– some have up to 7 essay questions on them! • Common App released August 1.

  5. Demystifying Early Admissions • Binding • ED to one school only • For students who have one top choice • Not recommended for families who need to compare Financial Aid packages to determine what college • Non-binding • EA to any amount of schools • Hear back sooner Early Decision Early Action

  6. Teacher Recommendations • Ask teachers in June of 11th grade: “Do you feel comfortable writing a solid recommendation for me?” • Over the summer, gather materials for them (next slide is Materials) • For teachers, the sooner the better! • Submitting electronically or by mail

Teacher Rec Materials • What to give to your teachers when asking for a recommendation: -a cover letter thanking them -a stamped envelope addressed to the Admissions Office of each college you are applying to -a resume detailing your extracurricular activities, leadership, volunteer work, etc. -a list of application deadlines per college -one copy of the Common Application Teacher Evaluation (found online)

Guidance Counselor Rec • Very important • Similar to Teacher Recs • But, instead of the Teacher Evaluation, they will be sending the Common Application Secondary School Report as well as your official high school transcript • Give your guidance counselor the materials as close to the first day of school as possible! • Specific forms on the Common App (Teacher/Guidance counselors)

  9. By the FIRST MONTH of senior year: You should have: • A solidlist of colleges • Your Common Application essay in its final stages of revision • Applying under any Early Decision/Action plans? Then have any Supplement essays done for your Early schools • Give teachers and guidance counselor the proper recommendation materials

  10. Then… • Apply as early as possible • Colleges have 2-3 week “lag times” • SAT issues and other materials • Email schools • For a January 1 deadline, do NOT submit application at 11:59pm on December 31!

  11. Once you hear back… • As you begin to hear back from colleges, -keep your guidance counselor up-to-date • Write thank you notes to teachers

  12. Interviews • Usually off-site • Alumni will contact you • Less imperative to admission • Alumni becomes “advocate” for you • Can be on or off-site • You must take initiative to schedule • See college’s instructions Alumni Interviews Admission Interviews
