Making Ceramics Transparent Gary L. Messing, Pennsylvania State Univ University Park, DMR 0749391 Ceramics are important components for high power lasers, electro-optic devices, and security on the battlefield. Ceramics used in these applications must be as transparent as window glass. The Messing group has developed new methods for processing transparent YAG-based (Y3Al5O12) composite ceramics from nanopowders that are highly transparent, operate in the eye safe wavelength, and have lasing characteristics comparable to single crystals. By processing ceramics at lower temperature and without melting results in significant cost and energy savings. 1 cm Er:YAG composite ceramic laser rod Transparent sheets of YAG ceramic
Making Ceramics TransparentGary L. Messing, Pennsylvania State Univ University Park, DMR 0749391 Four minority students from Pennsylvania high schools participated in a 6 week research program sponsored by the Summer Experience in Earth and Mineral Science (SEEMS) program at Penn State. The Messing group presented lessons about various aspects of ceramic processing and each student produced their own Nd:YAG ceramic laser material and tested the transmittance of their material. High school SEEMS students learning about ceramic processing. Their research project was titled “Transparent Nd:YAG Laser Gain Media”
