University of Michigan Administrative Information Services Business Objects XI R2 Upgrade Laura Bollettino May 24, 2006 Updated June 1, 2006
Why Upgrade? • Our current version (5.1.5) is no longer supported • Users have asked MAIS to provide Data Warehouse reporting over the Web • Positions U-M to create dashboards • Dashboard – a Web interface with indicators showing the status of various metrics
New Version • Business Objects Version XI Release 2 (XI R2), which includes: • BusinessObjects InfoView: The Web-based interface for running reports • BusinessObjects Web Intelligence (WebI): The Web-based product for creating, editing, and drilling into reports
What’s New in XI R2? • Run, create, and modify reports over the Web • Supports Safari 1.3 (Mac) • Two types of licenses • Some users only run reports (InfoView only) • Some users create, modify, and drill into reports (Web Intelligence and InfoView) • Note: This only affects BusinessObjects users – use of the Data Warehouse through any other tool is unaffected.
Timeframe • Planned XI R2 go-live July 24, 2006 • Go/delay decisions on May 25 and June 29 • 5.1.5 (current version) remains available for 3 months after XI R2 goes live • Running 5.1.5 and XI R2 simultaneously: • Allows users to finish reporting for business processes that began before go-live • Allows users flexibility in deciding when to switch • Enables users to run same report in 5.1.5 and XI to verify accuracy of results
Impact on Users • Significant changes • InfoView & WebI have different look & feel than current version • Must convert reports in order to be able to edit them in WebI • Two types of licenses (InfoView vs. WebI) • Medium changes • Won’t run BusinessObjects under Citrix • Some functionality changes: no import from Excel, no user objects • Small changes • Hierarchical report categories • DocAnalyze not available for XI R2 • BusinessObjects outage - not longer than a weekend
Converting Reports • Repository reports • MAIS will convert & make available at go-live • User reports • Users will send reports to MAIS before go-live • MAIS will run Report Conversion Tool, which does part of the conversion • After go-live, users will do the rest of the conversion: modify report formatting, etc. as needed • More details on this process at Interchanges in June • Prepare now: • Think about which reports you need to use after the go-live • Delete reports you no longer need
Communications • Message to 3D list • Message to BusinessObjects users • Web site for Upgrade • More communications to come
Other Support for Users • Interchanges • Report Conversion Interchanges for users who create, modify, and save reports • June 12 (Rackham), June 14 (Hospital), June 15 (North Campus) • InfoView & Web Intelligence Interchanges for all BusinessObjects users • July and August • Labs after the upgrade to help with report conversion • Training – eLearning • No required training for current BusinessObjects users • Documentation and delta materials
Unit Readiness Action Items • Unit Liaisons • Help your users understand impact of the upgrade • Encourage users to attend Interchanges • Watch for communications • Users • Plan to attend Interchanges • Think about which reports you need to use after the go-live • Delete reports you no longer need • Watch for communications
