Drought • 1/3 of world arable land suffers from in adequate supply of water for agriculture. • Yield of rainfed crops are periodically reduced by drought (Kramer 1980, Boyer • 1982). • Efficient irrigation techniques help to reduce the gap b/w potential and actual • yield. • Genetic improvement of crop productivity under arid conditions is necessary & • economically valuable solution for this problem. • Root characteristics can be important in determining the response of plant to • drought.
Malik et al. (1979) Reported an effect of drought stress on root distribution. Ekanayake et al. (1985) Showed that root length, number of roots and root density positively correlated with drought. Fukai, Cooper and price (1995 &1997) reported ratio of root wt. to shoot wt. are also correlated with drought resistance Pace et al. (1999) Drought-Stressed cotton seedling showed some increase in root length but reduce root diameter. Ling et al. (2002) Describes long and thick root system of rice contributes greatly to drought tolerance. Basal et al. (2005) Combining root morphological and plant physiological traits associated with drought tolerance should result in improved drought resistance in cotton.
QTLs Approach To under stand the genetics of root system various researcher have studied QTLs associated with root traits in different crops. Tuberosa et al. 2000: Qtl analysis of root characteristics in maize grown in hydroponics Wang et al. 2004: Mapping QTLs of soybean root weight with RILs population. Hund et al. 2004: Qtls controlling root shoot traits of maize seedlings under cold stress. Li et al. 2005: QTL mapping for root traits in rice. Zhu et al. 2005: Mapping QTLs for root hair length in maize.
