GOD (Theology) • God as creator • God as holy • God as just judge • God chooses- Election • God as gracious
HUMANITY (Anthropology) • Humanity is fallen. • Dominion (1:28; 2:19-20) becomes domination (9:2). • Violence- but not unrestrained (9:4). • Humanity as corporate. • Humanity still able to respond to God.
EARTH • All nature affected by sin (9:2; Rom 8:22) • World still continues (Gen 8:22; 9:11) • Nature still witnesses to God (9:13-14; Rom 1:20)
Problem of the Flood • How could God destroy so much of life?
John Calvin • We can be amazed, in the light of the cause for the punishment, that we aren’t engulfed in a deluge every day.
Human life is not an absolutely assured fact of reality; it exists simply by God’s good favor.
The story of Genesis 1-11 is not ultimately one of God’s punishment, but rather of his faithfulness to his creatures.
