  1. Phase One in Letters and Sounds • Distinguishing between different sounds e.g. environment, instruments, body percussion, speech. • Awareness and experimenting with speech sounds and words e.g. alliteration and rhymes. • Beginning to orally blend and segment phonemes. Year 1 Phonic workshops

  2. Phase 2 • The start of systematic phonic work. • Introduction of the GPCs (grapheme-phoneme correspondences) • 19 letters in 5 sets over 6 weeks • 1st set is s a t p • Teaching a letter – hear it , say it and write it. • Blending and segmenting VC and CVC words. • Read high frequency words HFW • Also introduce two syllable words and captions Year 1 Phonic workshops

  3. Letters and SoundsPhase 3 • Develops knowledge of GPCs and HFW • Covers the remaining 7 letters and further graphemes e.g. sh ng ai • Teaches and practises segmentation and blending of GPCs taught • Blend to read simple captions • Tricky words e.g. me they • Up to 12 weeks Year 1 Phonic workshops

  4. Letters and Sounds Phase 4 • No new GPCs • Introduces adjacent consonants • E.g. went lost help frog • Teach and practice blending and segmentation • Tricky words e.g. said have • 4 to 6 weeks Year 1 Phonic workshops

  5. Phase 5 • Children broaden their knowledge of graphemes and phonemes. • Teach further graphemes for reading for the 40+ phonemes learnt in phase 2 and 3. (e.g. split digraphs, ph for /f/) • Teach alternative spellings for phonemes e.g. /j/ = j in jelly g in gem dge in dodge • Teach alternative pronunciations for the graphemes e.g. ‘i’ in fin and find • Practise reading and spelling two and three syllable words • Learning more HFW • Reading and writing sentences • Taught throughout Year 1 Year 1 Phonic workshops

  6. Phase 6 • Increased fluency in blending words encountered for the first time in reading • Increased accuracy in spelling choices. • Throughout Year 2 and beyond. Year 1 Phonic workshops
