5. England and Colonists vs. French and Indians 1754 - 1763

6. Causes of War 1. England and France were at war in Europe, The 7 Year War. 2. The British and French have a long history of war and conflict. 3. Disputed land in the Ohio River Valley between the French and English Colonies. The French began to build forts as English colonists trappers pushed further into the Ohio River Valley. 8. New Fighting Style Appears The Indians fought using untraditional tactics. The type of fighting they used is referred to as Guerilla Warfare, or hit and run warfare. This means that the Indians instead of standing in a line across the field from your opponent and shooting at each other they would hide and shoot at the enemy when the enemy didn’t expect it. This would be adapted later during the Revolutionary War by the 13 Colonies.

9. Washington Braddock • Braddock and his army moved very slowly, building roads and bridges as they headed through the wilderness. Rigid mindset. • Braddock believed that fighting like the Indians was cowardly. * This led to his death! • Washington learned that the British were not unbeatable in battle as many people thought. • Washington believed that the key to winning the war was to fight like the Indians. * This led him to success during the RevolutionaryWar!

Albany Plan of Union • An attempt by Benjamin Franklin to unify the 13 colonies together. • It is important because it was the first time the 13 Colonies had tried to join together when there is a threat (France). • It was an early attempt at forming a union "under one government as far as might be necessary for defense and other general important purposes”

11. Effects of War • England and the Colonists beat the French and the Indians gaining control of the Ohio River Valley • The Treaty of Paris was formed between the opponents. France had to give up almost all of their land in North America. (See the next slides picture)

13. Colonial Frustrations Towards England as a Result of the War • The Proclamation of 1763 is imposed on the Colonists by the King. The colonists are restricted from moving west over the Appalachian Mountains. • This war was very costly to England. The British decided to tax the Colonists to help pay for the war! TAXATION!
