What does the DSM-IV TR SAY? • Substance Abuse • Pattern of use leading to significant distress • At least 1 of the following occurs within a year • A. recurrent use, resulting in failure to fulfill work, school, or home obligations • B. recurrent use in situations that are dangerous • C. Substance-related legal problems • D. Substance use that continues despite social/interpersonal problems
Substance Dependence and the DSM? • Pattern of use leading to significant distress • At least 3 of the following: • Tolerance • Withdrawal • Substance taken in large amounts over a longer period than was intended • Desire for substance or unsuccessful efforts to control use • Considerable time spent trying to obtain, use, or recover from the substance • Use in place of important activities • Use continues despite physical and psychological problems

Group work assignment • Each of you will be given a specific drug • I want you as a group to find out as much info. as you can on this type of drug • Signs, symptoms, treatment, routes of administration, statistics, etc. • You may use your books, web, personal knowledge etc.
Case Study Let’s look at this from the different psychological models • Brandon, a 20 year-old African American male • Lives/Grew up on the streets • Member of the Crypts in California • Father died of a heroin drug overdose • Has a girlfriend who is a flight attendant • Rarely keeps in contact with family members • As a gang initiation he had to steal, rape women, assault/battery others, got “beat in” to the gang, and had to sell drugs as his job within the gang • Peer pressure • Starting using drugs at the age of 9 • Committed a crime due to substance-induced psychosis-committed murder (PCP, MJ, alcohol) • Slit the throat of his 4 month nephew he was babysitting • Auditory commands-Tupac • Came from a family from a lower socioeconomic status • Grew up in South Central LA • Remembers hearing/seeing drive by shootings, and witnessed his cousin being shot over a drug deal went wrong • Dropped out of high school • Did not see his mother much growing up bc she was working 3 jobs
