Public Information Session Proposed Extension of the Acton Quarry May 5, 2009
Purpose of the Evening • Provide an overview of Dufferin’s extension application for the Acton Quarry • Listen to your concerns to ensure Dufferin understands all the issues from your perspective • Begin to answer your questions related to the proposed extension
Agenda • Dufferin’s Corporate Commitment • Overview of the Proposed Application and Key Technical Reports • Q&A
Overview of the Proposed Application • Dufferin’s land holdings in the area of the Acton Quarry total approximately 615 ha. • 265 ha. is the existing Quarry and processing area. • The extension’s proposed licence area is 124.4 ha, of which only 99 ha would be for extraction. • The remaining 225 ha of land will remain in a natural state.
Public Benefits of the Proposed Extension • High-quality, locally-sourced and efficiently priced aggregate for public infrastructure • Dedication of land to the public for long term recreation, conservation and water management needs • An opportunity to enhance the regional greenlands system, Niagara Escarpment parks and open space system, and local conservation space • Careful balance of economic, environmental and social considerations
Dufferin’s Application Addresses… • Land-use Planning • Natural Environment • Geology and Water Resources • Traffic • Blasting • Noise • Air Quality • Adaptive Management • Cultural Heritage
Surface and Ground Water Sensitive surface water and groundwater features will be protected, improved or restored • A performance-based Adaptive Management Plan is proposed to monitor and mitigate potential impacts • Final rehabilitated landform / lake levels will protect adjacent environmental features • Opportunity to enter into long term water management agreement to improve surrounding features
Natural Environment Impacts to the Greenlands are to be minimized • Minimal direct impact on significant natural features • Ecological features with important functions have been protected and will not be extracted; real opportunity for meaningful enhancement • A performance-based Adaptive Management Plan is proposed to monitor and mitigate potential impacts
Traffic • No increase in traffic above current approved tonnage limit • Excellent to acceptable levels of service projected • Road improvements and intersection improvements (some already planned by municipalities) will ensure that the traffic impact of the Quarry remains acceptable.
Blasting, Noise and Air • Proposed operation will comply with MOE’s guidelines for blasting and noise limit • Dust will be within MOE guideline levels • Continue to address nuisance concerns
