E.S.P.N. Everyone Stop Pollution Now
How It Started! • On February 22, 2007 the 8th grade TAG Science class was presented by their teachers with an article that was seen in the local news paper. KALB –Keeping Athens Limestone Beautiful- was encouraging people to Adopt- a -spot in Athens City and Limestone County, hoping to clean up the surrounding area. • This is where it all begin…...
Purpose • We the students of Mrs. Nana Garner and Mr. Todd Walton TAG Science class chose to adopt-a-spot as our community service learning project. • The purpose of our project is to encourage all citizens of our community to join together to help create a litter free environment.
How? • In order to get this started we contacted Mrs. Hart from KALB. We requested a section of Town Creek that flows though the middle of the City of Athens. • Our adopt-a-spot site was approved so, we were able to get started! • Mrs. Hart supplied us with safety vests, gloves, trash bags, and trash collectors, it was just what we needed to accomplish our first task.
Our First Visit! • On March 14, 2007 we made our first site visit. • We put on our vests, carried all of our gear and walked from our school to our adopted site. • We spent the next 3.5 hours picking up trash out of the creek and off of the creek bank. • We picked up 18 trash bags of litter, one 55 gallon trash can, and one 5 gallon bucket.
What Will We Do With The Trash? • To make use of our trash we decided that we would make sculptures out of the garbage that we found. • We constructed a person, an elephant, and a trash toilet. • The sculptures turned out great! • In the future, we hope to get money from the recyclable material that we find and donate that money to a local charity.
2nd Visit • On April 26, 2007 we went back to our site and picked up 5 more bags of trash. • We have decided to visit our site on a regular basis in order to monitor and maintain our cleaner environment.
Future Plans! • The project will not stop with us! • Future plans include taking water samples, soil samples, plant population, animal population, as well as keeping the stream litter free.
CHALLENGE!!!! • We leave a challenge to next years 8th grade science class to follow in our footsteps, to carry on our legacy of a litter free environment, and to MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN OUR COMMUNITY!
