Newton’s 2nd Law of Motion F = ma
Newton’s 2nd Law • An object acted on by an unbalanced force will accelerate in the direction of the force.
Force = mass x acceleration N = kg x m/s2
Weight- force of gravity on an object WEIGHT Changes w/ gravity MASS Stays the SAME
How does distance & mass affect gravity? More Mass = More Gravity More Distance = Less Gravity • There is less gravity acting on you if you were in plane as opposed to standing on ground b/c you are farther from Earth’s gravitational pull
How fast do objects fall to Earth? • Acceleration on Earth due to gravity is ALWAYS 9.8m/s2 • Acceleration Demo
3rd Law of Motion Action Reaction
3rd Law- for every action, there is an equal but opposite reaction EXAMPLES • Fish pushes back on water w/ fins & water propels fish forward • Wings of bird pushes down, air pushes up • Kick back on concrete, skateboard moves forward
A balloon & rocket are similar because as the air or gas pushes down the balloon or rocket goes up
