Welcome at IWF Wolfgang Baumjohann Institut für Weltraumforschung Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften IWF/ÖAW
Institut für Weltraumforschung • Since 40+ years engaged in the • exploration of near-Earth space and solar system • 85 scientists & engineers from 13 nations work in four research fields: • Earth’s gravity field • Space plasma physics • Solar system exploration • Physics of exoplanets • using instruments, data analysis, and theory IWF/ÖAW

Rosetta: Cometary Physics Rosetta orbiter and lander flyingtogether to comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko • Principal Investigator of MIDAS for microanalysis of dust particles in the environment of the comet • Co-I for dust mass spectrometer and lander penetrometer • Co-I for magnetometers aboard orbiter and lander • 2004: Launch (ESA) • 2014: Begin of measurementsJan: end of sleeping modeAug: arrival at cometNov: land on nucleus • 2016: End of measurements • 2018: End of data analysis IWF/ÖAW
Cluster: Ion Plasma Physics The Cluster satellites deliver data from four points in space allowing to do space plasma physics for the first time • Principal Investigator for potential control device • Participation in magnetometer development and construction • Co-I for electron beam experiment, ion and electron spectrometer • Launch: summer 2000 (ESA) • IWF data analysis concentrates on magnetotail region • >2000 articles (2013) → approx. 15% with IWF participation (~5% first author from IWF) IWF/ÖAW
MMS: Electron Plasma Physics NASA’s four MMS satellites (Magnetospheric MultiScale) will study electron physics of reconnection process in the Earth’s magnetosphere • Like Cluster mission, but • closer mutual distances • faster measurements • IWF biggest non-US partner • Principal Investigator for satellite potential control • Co-I for electron beam instrument & magnetometer • Launch: 2015 (NASA) IWF/ÖAW
BepiColombo: Mercury The two BepiColombo spacecraft • (MMO & MPO) will study Mercury’s surface, interior and magnetosphere • Principal Investigator for magnetometer on Japanese MMO • Principal Investigator for ion spectrometer on European MPO • Technical Management for MPO magnetometer • Launch: 2016 (ESA/JAXA) IWF/ÖAW
