  3. Requirements for CPD It began with the Royal Colleges, as CME The usual 50 hours (as points) per year 25 internal and 25 external CPD was born from a greater awareness of the wider needs of medical practice Then came CEPD… and the Colleges decided to hand it all over

  4. CPD and Appraisal Every doctor employed in the NHS… on an annual basis… must meet with a senior clinician/manager… review their clinical practice, CPD activities, audit results and plans for the year ahead… the outcome is recorded, and confirmed for national inspection

  5. Accountable Adult Learning Agree learning plan at annual appraisal Balance core CPD and specialised CPD Ensure both active and passive learning Provide adequate resources Personal and peer review Assess outcomes and look ahead

  6. What doctors should be learning Maintaining & expanding knowledge Developing new techniques Ethics; Diversity awareness Communication skills; Teamworking How to teach (and learn?) Management skills…

  8. Who pays? The advantages of NHS employment 10 days of paid study leave per year reasonable expenses are re-imbursed! Specific education budgets are allocated at national and local levels A service funded from general taxation so the Government insists on control
