Our design goals • InclusiveEvery spectator should be able to participate, one person one vote. • Ease of useSpectators independent of their background should be able to use the system immediately. This should include usage by persons with disabilities. • RobustnessThe system should be simple and robust with regard to installation and maintenance. • Cost effectiveDevelopment, installation and operation of the system should be fairly cheap. • SustainabilityThe system should be designed in a way, that it can be used in further events and that it is ecological. • Tamper ProofMake sure the system is save from manipulation so the audience can trust it. red_team

7. Discussion ofDesign alternatives red_team

Design Alternative: Input Device • An input device with buttons and a display for every spectator is too expensive. • The installation of wires is also very costly. • The maintenance of 15000 devices is time consuming. • Input devices are vulnerable for vandalism. • Input devices are difficult to modify for future needs. red_team

Design Alternative: cell phone • Many, but not everybody has one. • Too many different standards (international audience). • Who pays for communication costs? • Cheating is possible. • Involvement of third party company (telecommunication providers) is necessary. (Ask the Hellenic Telecommunications Organisation, who is Grand National Sponsor... or Nokia, AT&T, NTT, Ericsson....) red_team

Personae • Mr. Lee, 54, from Beijing has come to the gymnastics competition to collect ideas for the Olympic Games 2008 in Beijing. • Mr. Lee is curious about the experience for the audience. • A Group of young locals who won tickets to the competition in a radio open contest. • The group is excited about their first visit to a sport competition. red_team

15. Distribution of Judging Board • The staff hands out the judging board at the cashier counter • After taking a seat at the stadium Mr. Lee opens the judging board he received at the entrance. Mr. Lee notices the numbers and takes a glance at the instruction manual on the first page. • The group of locals watch the instruction video on the stadium screen. red_team

The First Voting • After the athlete performed his dive the moderator asks the audience to use their judging board to give their points. • Mr. Lee combines the numbers on the board to a 9.4 and puts the board on his knees. • One of the locals notices the people around them who use the audience voting board while the others are still talking about their first visit to the Olympic games. red_team

Displaying Results • The points of the judges appear on the stadium display 9.4. • Next to it are the votes of the audience 9.0 (and an image which represents the votes for each seat). • Mr. Lee is happy about his vote that matches the one from the judges and is eager to watch the next athlete. • The locals notice the number next to the result of the judges and the image that shows dark and light dots. red_team

The second Voting • The next athlete is the favourite of the audience. • After his performance the moderator asks for the votes of the judges and the audience. • Mr. Lee has noticed a mistake in the athlete’s performance and combines the numbers to a 9.0. • The locals use the judging board, set them to 10and put the board over their heads. red_team

Displaying Results • The points of the judges appear on the stadium display 9.0. • Next to it are the votes of the audience 9.8 and the image has turned much darker in the area where the group sits. • Mr. Lee is happy about his vote that matches the one from the judges and is eager to watch the next athlete. • The locals are happy, too, because they see that the majority of the audience also likes their favourite. Additionally they see that their votes were counted because of the colour of the image. They are looking forward to the next performance. red_team
