25 Recognizing 25+ Years of Commitment to the ISEP Network
Changing Times, Continual Commitment • 25 years may seem like a long time, but throughout these years, ISEP has kept its commitment to its members by providing an avenue for student exchange in a growing number of countries around the world. Entire ISEP Staff, 1994 ISEP Staff, present day
Experiences of a Lifetime • The success of the ISEP Network is not possible without the commitment of the Members around the world. • This year, we would like to honor those ISEP Members for their continued dedication for 25+ years. • We hope you’ll enjoy some past memories and student photo-essays from our anniversary members.
Experiences of a Lifetime Anna Hamburger, 2000-01 U Mississippi James Park, 2001-02 Yonsei University Barbara Gurtner, 2000-01 Western Washington University Amy Sullivan, 2000-01 University of Tampere
Experiences of a Lifetime • “It proved a semester of growth, discomfort, discovery and possibility. I was seduced by all the wonders of the world like a helpless tourist passing a traditional patisserie in the early morning, the smell of slightly-burned butter tempting one to look into the glass case, just for a peek at a pain chocolat. So I turned on my heel, my appetite to explore the intricacies of others’ stories, cultures, languages wet as I pushed through the glass door.” • Patrick Dichter, Université Paul Cézanne (Aix-Marseille), Fall 2007
Experiences of a Lifetime “The day of commencement everyone wore his own cap and gown, and a sash of his home country … for me it was like a dream, because in Italy we don’t have any ceremony similar, and I had seen caps and gowns only in American TV shows! Walking on the stage and hearing my name called on the microphone was a real emotion! My “diploma” says I am an honorary member of the Class of 2008.” Chiara Castelbolognesi, Spring 2008 to St. Lawrence University, Photo-Essay Contest winner
Experiences of a Lifetime “I am a first-generation college student from a single-parent household. Thanks to the ISEP scholarship, I am the first person in my family to study abroad, to travel overseas, and to speak a foreign language fluently!” Ashley Maynor, University of Tennessee to Université de Paul Valéry, 2002-03
Experiences of a Lifetime “I did a lot of thinking while I was living in Finland. I wasn't only studying the language at the university there. I was studying the way I perceived life; the life I was used to and the way I perceived life for me and for those who lived in other countries. And as I gradually adjusted to early afternoon sunsets and twilight dawns, I adapted to a new way of thinking and perceiving the world that has changed my life.” Amy SullivanUniversity of Tampere, Finland, Full Year 2001-2002
Experiences of a Lifetime “My year as an exchange student was one of the most important of my life, albeit one of the hardest. Since I was in college in the same town where I had grown up, it was truly my first experience being on my own. My year in Besançon really helped determine my career path as I went on to get a Masters in International Business and went to work first for Michelin (after doing a six-month internship in France as part of my graduate studies) and then for BNP.” Nancy Stengel, student to Université de Franche-Comté, 1981
Experiences of a Lifetime “I chose Thailand because I wanted to learn more about their culture and society that is so different from my own. I found an apartment across the river from school, which made for a great daily walk through the vibrant, morning markets.” Thomas Hoyt, Fall 2007 to Thammasat University, Photo-Essay Contest Winner
Experiences of a Lifetime “If you are looking forward to study in the U.S., Hendrix College is a place you definitely want to consider. Discover the rich country life where you can go horseback riding, rock-climbing, canoeing, water-skiing, and broaden your horizons. You will appreciate southern hospitality. I've come to love Arkansas, the Natural State, and my expectations have been far exceeded.” Koffi Agbemehin, Université de Picardie Jules Verne to Hendrix College
Experiences of a Lifetime Elizabeth Peters, Spring 2005, Universität Trier Tom Ellis, 2007-07, University of Denver Hanna Kelley, Spring 2008, Brock University Eva De Vaan, Fall 2006, University of Utah
Experiences of a Lifetime “ISEP provided an affordable study abroad experience that changed my life. I have a better idea now of who I am and what sort of a career will suit me best. Living in Belfast changed me forever. Although my university classes were interesting and educational, I am more of a changed person now as a result of the cultural and social aspects.” Brittany Wahlin, U Minn Twin Cities to University of Ulster
Experiences of a Lifetime “The greatest challenge that I faced in Korea was to say goodbye to this beautiful country and to the friends and family that I have met. But this is part of the answer to the question of studying abroad. Your experiences are worth a million memories, but saying goodbye to them isn't the end to them. Rather, it is only the beginning.” James Park, Indiana State University to Yonsei University (Republic of Korea), 2001-2002
“I have enjoyed being a coordinator for more than twenty years! We sent and welcomed over 200 students, making it possible for them to open their eyes and their minds on a world they had hardly ever dreamt of. ISEP has been for me the "experience of a lifetime" and I thank you all for making dreams come true!” Brigitte Malinas-Vaugien, retired ISEP coordinator at Université de Franche-Comté
“After 30+ years working in international education, I recently retired from Old Dominion University. I think I must hold the world record for longest-serving ISEP Campus Coordinator, having started in this role at the University of Minnesota in 1981 and continuing in it at ODU for the last 12 years. I've been involved with ISEP for almost the entire time of its existence (longer even than Mary Anne), and I'm very pleased by its enduring success. Reciprocal student exchange remains for me the ideal education abroad format and I hope it plays an increasingly central role for us in the States.” Steve Johnson Former Director of Study Abroad Old Dominion University
Celebrating 25+ Years Please join ISEP as we congratulate member institutions celebrating 25+ years of commitment to the ISEP Network!
