  1. Introduction to Preventive Machinery Maintenance By Alison Burkett, Trey Holden

  2. Common Shop Machines • Band saw • Drill press • Lathe • Milling machine • Surface grinder • Maintaining the machines in a shop is vital for maintaining safe working conditions and optimal machine performance. • Optimal machine performance of all machines in one shop  optimal production for the shop as a whole.

  3. Maintenance Requirements… Do all machines require the same maintenance tasks? If there is more than one band saw in a shop, are the band saws’ maintenance requirements the same?

  4. Factors of Maintenance • Maintenance requirements can vary between different types of machines and each machine individually. • The maintenance that is needed for one particular machine depends on two factors: • Age of the machine • Manufacturer of the machine

  5. Maintenance Checklists To perform maintenance on a given machine, you will need to do the following: • Check the machine’s history. • Review the checklist from the machine’s previous maintenance and read through any comments made. • Review the manufacturer’s specifications regarding maintenance. • Perform maintenance on the machine according to your checklist and manufacturer’s specifications (while taking into account any information from past maintenance).

  6. Common Items on a Maintenance Checklist • Ensure that the machine stays clean (as well as the area around it). • Check the machine carefully for any damage. • Ensure that all oil reservoirs are filled properly. • Refer to the machine’s maintenance schedule for maintenance and any necessary periodical adjustments. • A machine’s maintenance schedule is found in its owner’s (manufacturer’s) manual.

  7. In the next lesson… • You will be performing preventive maintenance on a given machine with a partner. • Remember what to look for: • The machine’s history • Manufacturer’s specifications • You will be provided with a checklist to follow.
