E N D
International MSc in Chemical Engineering? • Background • Continuing crisis in student recruitment • Desire to provide an international option, more international collaboration, exchange • Benefit from ”quota-programme” • Solution? • International MSc-programme in Chemical Engineering • 2 year programme (120 credits), with 1 term ”diploma-dissertation” – parallell to exisisting programme • Today about 10 such programmes at NTNU • Issues • Can we improve numbers/recruitment by going ”international”? • Can we compete internationally? • Can we get good students this way • Will we hurt/damage the existing programme?
Key questions 1Structure of programme • Across the entire department? • As the 5 year programme • Only selected topics/directions (with market power)? • E.g. • Pulp & paper • Oil production and processing • ….. • Example: Dep. of Material Technology: • Only one spcialized programme. Int. MSc in light metals production
Key questions 2Language • All teaching will have to be in English year 4 & 5 • What about year 3 (and even 2 )? • Some students may need 1 or more of e.g. • Chemical Reaction Engineering • Separation Technology • Colloid and Surface Chemistry • Separate courses in English for these students, or strict admission requirements?
Key questions 3Admission requirements • BSc Chemical Engineering or similar • Should in general remove all issues with mathemathics, basic engineering subjects • Limited number of candidates? • BSc in chemistry or ”other science” • Would require more basic subjects (maths, basic chem.eng.) • More available candidates? • BSc in other engineering sciences (e.g. Mechanical Engineering) • Lack of basic Chem. Eng. subjects • ”3rd world”, outside area of Bologna decl. • What background do candidates from these countries have?
Reminder: EFCE/Bologna declaration recommendationsFirst cycle (BSc) core curriculum:
ContentsWe have a 2 year programme for engineering candidates with BSc equiv (ing.høgskole):Year 1:
Contents of Int. MSc should be built upon the same model Some adjustments programme might be necessary NTNU demands ”Experts in Teams” Difficulty in fitting in Plant Design Project? Year 2
Internasjonal MSc – Chem.
