What is the Meriam Report? • The Meriam Report was a survey on Indian Affairs in the United States. Lewis Meriam was the technical director of the survey team that compiled information regarding the conditions of American Indians. The report was a narrative and statistical criticism of the ineffectiveness of the Dawes Act, as well as conditions on reservations and in Boarding Schools.

FINDINGS • The Federal Government was failing miserably at it’s goal of protecting Native American’s, their homelands, and their resources. • The report formed the basis for the Indian Reorganization Act of 1934.
