How it started • Oct 6 1973 USA support Israel in war with Arab neighbors • Oct 19 oil-exporting countries of ME cut off oil to US • In response oil prices skyrocket • High Energy use--10 MPG or less • Homes/businesses poorly insulated
Effect on Auto Industry • Limited sales of gas, gas station hours • Auto industry lost business • Detroit lost revenue to fuel-efficient imports • Auto companies went bankrupt/ forced to convert to natural gas (pricy) • Auto industry- high costs, low profit, layoffs, bankruptcy
Effect on usa • Shortage of electricity, gas, heating oil • Factories and schools shut down • Commercial flights canceled • Electrical brownouts
