  2. Causes of WWI • Militarism: preparing for war • Alliances • Nationalism: colonies wanted independence • Imperialism • Assassination

  3. Tipping Point (Assassination) • Bosnia was a territory that belonged to Austria Hungary. • Many Bosnians had strong ties to Serbia. • Archduke Franz Ferdinand (heir to throne of Austria Hungary) was murdered while visiting Serbia. • He was murdered by Bosnians who felt that Bosnia should be part of Serbia. • War begins July of 1914.

  4. Alliances The Allies: • Russia • France • Serbia • Great Britain • United States of America Central Powers: • Germany • Austria-Hungary • Ottoman Empire

  5. The Introduction of Modern Warfare • Machine guns • Hand grenades • Chemical warfare • Submarine warfare • The Germans perfected the use of submarines during the war.

  6. Lets Go For A Cruise • The Lusitania: British passenger boat sunk by a German U-boat. 128 of the 1200 dead passengers were Americans.

  7. The Zimmerman Telegram • Germany sent a telegram to Mexico urging them to join the fight against the U.S. and in return Germany would ensure that Mexico would receive land that once belonged to them that the U.S. took. • The British intercepted the message and gave it to the U.S.

  8. TO WAR! • April 6, 1917: President Wilson signs the declaration of war because of the Zimmerman Note.
