The Northwest & The Fur TradeSS 10 In this lesson you will learn about both companies in the Canadian fur trade
Hmmm…it’s warm up time • What were the two main companies in the fur trade? • True or False: There were approx. 6 million beavers prior to the start of the fur trade? • True or False: The saying, “Eh” may be a direct result of the fur trade? • Let’s get going w/ some notes…
The Two Players Were… • Hudson Bay Company • North West Company
Hudson Bay Company • Founded on May 2nd 1670 • Run by, French Dutch and English. Controlled by French and native allies. • “Stay by the Bay” policy • The HBC spread when two coureurs de bois members brought furs to London. • Traded with Europeans • Hudson Bay - London
North West Company • NWC founded in 1779. • Gave HBC a run for their money. They traded with everyone they encountered. • Not “Stay at Bay” but go inland
Differences NWC thought that marrying First Nation woman would increase trade HBC – celibacy=discouraged relationships HBC had a bunch of posts around the Bay and customers came to them and prices were firm (dealt in Beaver value)=no bargaining NWC: open to bargaining
Differences? • There are many between HBC & NWC • You will find the rest in the next activities. • First: Do some exploring & note-taking. • Second: “Head Hunter” activity in triads, yup, that’s into group of 3’s you go. • HBC & NWC Quiz (15 marks): ______________
