The EUSAAR operational procedures TFMM, 23-25 April, Bordeaux, France
EUSAAR Intercalibration Exercises (2007 and 2008) • OC/EC (J. –P. Putaud, JRC):Round-Robin intercomparison and development of artefact free sampler • Size distribution(A. Wiedensohler, IFT): intercalibration and improvement of SMPS. • Optical properties(A. Wiedensohler, IFT):intercalibration of absorption/scattering coefficient instruments and corrective procedures. • Hygroscopic Properties (U. Baltensperger, PSI): Develop and cross-calibrate monitoring HTDMA • Nanoparticle size distribution (M. Kulmala/Pasi Aalto, UHEL): Intercalibrate particle/cluster/ion size distribution below 10 nm • AOD (G. de Leeuw, FMI, UHEL): Intercalibrate non AERONET AOD instruments TFMM, 23-25 April, Bordeaux, France
EUSAAR Intercalibration Exercises (2007 and 2008). Main Results • OC/EC (J. –P. Putaud, JRC):Round-Robin intercomparison and development of artefact free sampler • Intercomparison of identical filters from several EUSAAR sites operating operating with similar thermo-optical methods • Need for homogeneizing methods (even if there is no best method) Converging towards a EUSAAR method for thermal-optical methods • Sampling strategy is also address to account for the Impact of volatile Organic compounds on TC measurements TFMM, 23-25 April, Bordeaux, France
EUSAAR Intercalibration Exercises (2007 and 2008). Main Results • Size distribution(A. Wiedensohler, IFT): intercalibration and improvement of SMPS. • 34 CPCs (12 different models) and 16 SMPS were checked and calibrated • Intercalibration clearly needed. High variability in terms of total number and size • Improvement when using standard retrieval procedures • Additional work to improve use of commercial instruments for monitoring operation in specific conditions • Development of additional SMPS for Montseny, Kosetice and Finokalia TFMM, 23-25 April, Bordeaux, France
EUSAAR Intercalibration Exercises (2007 and 2008). Main Results • Optical properties(A. Wiedensohler, IFT):intercalibration of absorption/scattering coefficient instruments and corrective procedures. • Large variability amongst abs. Coef. Measuring instruments. • Avoid the use of BC but rather limit the interpretation to abs. Coeff. • MAAP appears as the most suited instruments. Correction is needed for aethalometers • Variability of nephelemeters also significant TFMM, 23-25 April, Bordeaux, France
EUSAAR Intercalibration Exercises (2007 and 2008). Main Results • Hygroscopic Properties (U. Baltensperger, PSI): Develop and cross-calibrate monitoring HTDMA • 11 instruments prepared according to common conceipt. Will be used for EUCAARI campaigns by PSI, SU, CNRS, ICPF, UHEL, FMI, UIG, JRC, IFT • Common Routine inversion procedures prepared by PSI • Key variable for chemistry – transport simulation TFMM, 23-25 April, Bordeaux, France
EUSAAR Intercalibration Exercises (2007 and 2008). Main Results • Nanoparticle size distribution (M. Kulmala/Pasi Aalto, UHEL): Intercalibrate particle/cluster/ion size distribution below 10 nm • SMPS size range can be extented down to 5nm on a routine basis • AIS (and NAIS/BSMA) provide a very useful complement to classical SMPS for nanoparticle monitoring • Successful intercomparison of 10 AIS available in Europe • AIS deployed within EUCAARI at several sites TFMM, 23-25 April, Bordeaux, France
EUSAAR data base and sampling quality 1- Use common formatting procedures for data diffusion (NASA-AMES) 2- Data transferred to NILU/EUSAAR/EBAS data base according to submission protocol similar to EMEP (2006 data already submitted) 3- Automatic link to WDCA in JRC In addition 4- Hold regular audits of EUSAAR stations (instrument and personnel) – Audits highlight the need for regular inspection of sampling procedure and instrument maintenance 5- Hold regular aerosol courses for EUSAAR partners and associates TFMM, 23-25 April, Bordeaux, France
EUSAAR : An Infrastructure in support of EU Integrated projects (EUCAARI, MEGAPOLI) and EMEP strategy TFMM, 23-25 April, Bordeaux, France
EUCAARI : Objectives within Element 2 (Regional Air pollution) • Quantify the contributions of different anthropogenic and natural sources to the PM10, PM2.5, and ultrafine particle concentrations. • provide new information on particle hygroscopicity and composition, along with the source apportionment • estimate the hygroscopic evolution and loading due to long-range transport. • contribute to the validation of both process-models and regional AQ models TFMM, 23-25 April, Bordeaux, France
EUCAARI : Intensive observation Periods 2008/2009 • Concentrate data provision within the May08-May 09 period • Perform intensive measurements at selected sites to better characterize the main transport corridors in Europe. • Long-term monitoring activities completed by pilot studies involving high resolution aerosol measurements and aircraft operations (F, UK, D) TFMM, 23-25 April, Bordeaux, France
IOP 2008-2009: instrumental deployment • 1 - Year round measurements (May 2008- May 2009): • Measurements performed within EUSAAR : size distribution, bulk chemistry (OC/EC, Inorganic), optical properties • Year round measurements with EUSAAR-HTDMAs:– 10 instruments will be ready by the beginning of 2008 • Additional CCN concentrations needed at some sites. How many CCNC are available still a question (3/4) • Additional AIS measurements (11 instruments) TFMM, 23-25 April, Bordeaux, France
IOP 2008-2009: instrumental deployment • 3 intensive campaigns are scheduled in 2008 EUCAARI (May) in Cabauw and Finokalia, SPC (March), EMEP (Sept-October 08) and EMEP (February09). • EMEP sites not necessarily identical to EUCAARI/EUSAAR sites • Additional HTDMA measurements at selected sites (SPC, FInokalia) concentrations needed at some sites • AMS measurements will be performed but not enough instruments available – Some MARGA deployed as well. • LIDAR information when available • Additional speciation from WP2.3 (14C, Levog….) and information from the CARBOSOL program at selected sites only (K-Puzsta, SPC, Vavihill, Finokalia,..) EUCAARI / EMEP / EUSAAR synergies within the 2008/2009 Intensive Observation Periods TFMM, 23-25 April, Bordeaux, France
EUSAAR/ EMEP / EUCAARI synergies: recommendations • EUSAAR provides measurements of aerosol variables in addition to standard EMEP. • Additional measurements during 2008-2009 IOP are provided through the EUCAARI program (both long-term and campaigns) • EMEP campaign scheduled Sept. 08 and Feb. 09 provide the opportunity to make the 2008-2009 a reference year for future modelling activities in Europe. • Only a few necessary measurements are covered under the EUSAAR/EUCAARI projects. Additional participation from funding agencies in the member states clearly necessary. • ACCENT/EUSAAR may provide additional funding but expect competition for that call (i.e. first call of 2007 : 300 k€ requested and 60 k€ distributed), second call is opened TFMM, 23-25 April, Bordeaux, France
EUSAAR/ EMEP / EUCAARI synergies: recommendations Important recommendation for efficient use of the measurements: • For advanced aerosol variables, there is a clear need for intercalibration exercises before use in joint operation (standard QA/QC and analytical procedures for EMEP/EUCAARI/EUSAAR) • There is a need for an integrated aerosol data base (standard data formatting) • Favour co-location of gas/aerosol measurements at supersites over spreading the effort over too many not so well instrumented stations. • Additional effort to non-EUSAAR partners but key requirements TFMM, 23-25 April, Bordeaux, France
EUSAAR/ EMEP / EUCAARI synergies: recommendations Thank you for the attention TFMM, 23-25 April, Bordeaux, France
