High and Low Context Cultures • Presented by the respected anthropologist and cross-cultural researcher Edward T. Hall Beyond Culture (1976) • All cultures can be situated in relation to one another through the styles in which they communicate
Low Context Cultures • Logical, linear, individualistic, and action-oriented • Value logic, facts, and directness • Decisions are based on facts rather than intuition • Communication is straightforward, concise, and efficient, words are chosen precisely and intended to be taken literally
High Context Cultures • Relational, collectivist, intuitive, and contemplative • Emphasize interpersonal relationships • People are less governed by reason than by intuition or feelings • Words are not so important as the context, including the speaker’s tone of voice, facial expression, gestures and posture
