How does a computer think? • Computers take the information it is given and change it into something they can understand • This is in Binary
What is binary • Binary: • A notation for the state that given two options, only can occur at a time • Examples of Binary: • A light can be on or can be off • A side of a magnet can be positive or negative
What’s inside a computer? • Storage devices like Hard Disk Drives use a combination of magnetic positives and magnetic negatives and CDs and DVDs use laser light that either reflects or does not reflect back. • The processor use ones and zeros to send signals and wires can be on or off.
We can use Binary to convert Letters to numbers the computer can understand ASCII Table - “American Standard Code for Information Interchange”
Coding • Code/Coding - Transformation from one representation to another. • Encode - Convert a familiar message into code. • Decode - Convert a coded message into something familiar.
What is Binary made up of? • Words are made up of characters • Binary are made up of bits • Bit - Short for “Binary Digit”
