  3. What do these trends indicate? Cohabitation 1. It is more socially acceptable now than in previous years to cohabit. 2. Less people seem to feel the need to formally commit to each other in marriage. Marriage

  11. BUT CHRISTIANS DISAGREE ON • Most Christians say sex should only happen in marriage – BECAUSE: • the Bible says sexual immorality is wrong (1 Corinthians 6); • Church leaders take a traditional view that pre-marital sex is wrong.

Get with it! • Some Christians say pre-marital sex may be acceptable if the couple are in a long-term committed relationship and intend to marry - BECAUSE: • Jesus taught love is the guiding principle of life - sex can and should be an expression of love; • they believe the Church should reflect the changing nature of society and move with the times.

  18. Why might divorces have increased so much? Perhaps because: 1. it is easier and cheaper to divorce 2. there is less social stigma about divorce 3. people have unrealistic expectations of marriage 4. women are less prepared to tolerate bad treatment from their husbands

  20. EVIL EVIL Some Protestant Churches allow divorce and re-marriage because: Jesus allowed divorce (Matthew 19) in cases of adultery; if people make a mistake, they should be allowed another chance as long as they are sorry; Jesus taught us that God forgives sins; sometimes divorce can be:

  21. The Catholic Church .... x does not allow divorce anyone who is divorced is not allowed to receive communion; WHY? the vows at a wedding indicate marriage is for life - “till death do us part”; Jesus said in Mark 10 that anyone divorcing and remarrying is committing adultery.

  22. The Catholic Church .... x does allow for an annulment “a declaration that a marriage did not exist” Reasons: • if someone was forced into marriage • if someone did not intend to keep the vows at the time of marriage • if someone was mentally unstable at the time of marriage.

Commandments promote family life “Do not commit adultery” “Honour your father and mother” At the marriage ceremony, Catholics promise to accept children lovingly from God Jesus was born into a family with Mary and Joseph Adam and Eve were a family

What do Catholics believe about family life? • Parents should look after their children and eventually children should look after them. • Parents should set a good example for children. • Children should respect their parents. • Parents should bring their children up to be Catholic(take them to church, have them baptised, pray with them, tell them Bible stories, etc.)
